Recycled Eyeglasses & Hearing Aids
The Jefferson City Host Lions Club has an active ongoing program of collecting eyeglasses and hearing aids. Several years ago the club converted mailboxes, repainted yellow and with a large Lions logo. These are placed in the following locations: Capital Mall, Stadium Wal-Mart, Schulte's Fresh Foods, and Gerbes Super Center.

Prescription eyeglasses, prescription and non-prescription sunglasses and reading glasses are acceptable, but not contact lenses. Children eyeglasses are especially needed. The local community has been extremely supportive of this project. For the past two years, the club has collected over 9,000 eyeglasses, and over 150 hearing aids.

The hearing aids are rehabilitated, and then given to youngsters in need, through the auspices of the School for the Deaf in Fulton, MO.

The eyeglasses are delivered to Saving Sight in Columbia, MO. The eyeglasses are cleaned, categorized by prescription, photographed and processed for redistribution. These recycled glasses supports Lions Mission Clinics, a partnership between the Missouri Lions and Saving Sight to operate two international eyeglass recycle trips per year. Additionally, through a new partnership with ReSpectacle, the processed eyeglasses are made available online, free of charge to those in need locally, nationally, and across the globe. Visit www.respectacle.org to learn how to receive free high quality used eyeglasses.
